News: U&H Attorneys Obtain Emergency Relief, Preserve Hospital Property Tax Exemption

After local officials asserted that a corporate reorganization amounted to a change in ownership of Genesis Health System's Illini Hospital in Silvis, Illinois, the Rock Island County Board of Review took steps to place assessed values on the hospital real estate. Previously, it had been classified as property tax exempt by the Illinois Department of Revenue.

Rather than consenting to an administrative proceeding, Illini Hospital filed in the Circuit Court a Verified Complaint and Motion seeking to have the Board enjoined from assessing the property. After obtaining a Temporary Restraining Order, Illini Hospital succeeded in convincing the Board to withdraw the assessment and the lawsuit was concluded by agreement.
