News: Mike Philippi quoted in Chicago Lawyer Article Regarding Law Firms' Use of Contract Attorneys

Chicago Lawyer
01/01/05

The article in the January 2005 issue of Chicago Lawyer discusses the increasing use of contract attorneys by large law firms and its cost-effectiveness for clients.

"'At those rates, it often makes sense for law firms to hire contract workers to do routine types of work,' said Michael J. Philippi, chair of Ungaretti & Harris' litigation department.

"'We're often involved in the kind of cases that mega-firms would throw 10,12, 20 lawyers at,' Philippi said of his mid-sized firm. 'We find [using contract lawyers] to be very effective for our clients, and a good way to be able to separate issues in a case where partners and associates are involved in more substantive issues...Most of my clients are in-house lawyers who understand you don't have to pay someone $250 an hour to create a privilege log.'"
