Kamau’s practice focuses on both employment and commercial litigation matters. He has successfully represented clients in a wide range of employment discrimination, breach of contract, products liability, ERISA, and wrongful termination and hiring practices matters. He is experienced in handling internal investigations, and litigation involving allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation, gender, race, age, national origin and disability discrimination under Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Illinois Human Rights Act, as well as non-compete and non-solicitation claims under the laws of multiple states. He is also experienced in counseling employers on various human resources and personnel issues, including employment policies and handbooks, workplace conduct and sexual harassment training and seminars, and negotiating employment and employee separation agreements.
Kamau also represents clients in commercial litigation and contract disputes. His general litigation experience includes complex damages and claims valuation, and the defense of various clients in negligent manufacture and design, improper warning and labeling, fraud, and Lanham Act false advertising claims.
His recent representative matters include:
- Representing a pharmacy benefits management company and employee against former employer seeking to prohibit employee from working, disclosing confidential information, and for various alleged breaches of duty of loyalty.
- At the case’s outset and without incurring any discovery expenses, Kamau negotiated a full dismissal in a case claiming liability against client for tortious acts committed by employee using employer’s computers and computer network.
- Obtained summary judgment in single plaintiff Title VII case alleging failure to promote on the basis of race and constructive discharge. Martin v. Deloitte & Touche, LLP, 2005 WL3115228
- Obtained favorable verdict in 10-count case alleging violations of Section 1981, ERISA, FMLA and various torts.
- Representing healthcare client in multi-million dollar breach of contract/promissory estoppels lawsuit between Fortune 100 companies.
- Representing a manufacturing company against breach of warranty claims alleging millions of dollars in lost profits.
Kamau also serves as Co-Chair of the firm's Diversity Committee and on the firm's Summer Associate Program Committee.
