Kamau A. Coar
Kamau is a partner in both the litigation and employment departments. His broad, cross-disciplinary experience ranges from complex damages analyses and claims valuations in breach of contract and related claims, to counseling companies during investigations of claims of fraud, to defending against various federal and state employment discrimination claims.
His recent representative matters include:
Complex Commercial Litigation
- Representing a Fortune 50 in complex claims for hundreds of millions in lost profits under interrelated theories of lost profits, promissory estoppel and other various tort theories.
- Representing a large telecommunications company against claims of breach of contract and fraud in the purchase and sale of its equipment.
- Representing private companies against claims of fraud in the purchase and sale of its shares.
- Representing private companies in internal investigations by government agencies regarding claims of fraud and market manipulation.
- Representing a financial services company in the enforcement and collection of various promissory notes.
- Representing multiple companies, both defending and enforcing the terms of letter of intent agreements.
Employment Litigation
- Successfully defending a financial services company against numerous claims of race, gender and age discrimination.
- Successfully defending a large company against claims of liability for unauthorized computer use by its employees.
- Negotiating, drafting and enforcing multiple employment agreements for various clients.
- Representing private employers in various employment discrimination matters, including violations of Title VII, ADEA, ADA, FMLA and state law analogues.
- Representing large companies in class action claims for racial discrimination and discriminatory hiring and disciplinary practices.
- Prosecuting and defending equitable claims seeking temporary and permanent injunctive relief.
- Representing companies in various claims arising out of the management of employer pension funds under ERISA.
- Assisting multiple clients in various plant shutdowns and layoffs, including compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws.
Tort Litigation
- Representing medical device companies against claims of negligent design manufacture of its products.
- Representing multiple pharmaceutical companies against claims of improper labeling and packaging of certain drugs.
- Representing a large foreign manufacturing company in claims that its products failed and caused the purchaser to lose over one hundred million dollars in profits.
- Representing a large health care company against claims of false advertising and breach of contract and alleging hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.
Kamau also serves as Co-Chair of the firm's Diversity Committee and on the firm's Summer Associate Program Committee.
